Decking & pergolas in Emerald.
Emerald is the prettier, slightly-less-bushfire-stressed cousin of Cockatoo — same Cardinia Hills topography, similar BAL ratings (mostly 12.5–19), more established acreage and large-garden blocks. Decking here is usually about extending the existing living into a mature garden.
The Emerald decking story.
BMO zone but generally lower BAL.
Emerald sits in the same Bushfire Management Overlay as Cockatoo but the BAL ratings are usually lower — most blocks BAL-12.5 to BAL-19, fewer BAL-29+ properties. Treated pine + Class 1 underdecking is usually sufficient for BAL-12.5 jobs, with merbau or spotted gum upgrades on BAL-19 sites. Every Emerald property still needs BAL compliance sign-off at council certification — that’s not optional.
Tree-protection-zone aware.
Emerald is famous for mature mountain ash and stringybark. Cardinia Shire has a Significant Tree register and most established blocks have a Tree Protection Zone (TPZ) limiting excavation and root disturbance within the dripline. We screw-pile footings rather than concrete pad to avoid the 600mm-deep dig — less root damage, less risk of council notice, much faster installation.
Acreage outdoor-living.
A typical Emerald block is 1,000–5,000m² (1-hectare quarter-acre +). Decks here are often 40–60m² with a paired pergola, sometimes extending into a garden-facing alfresco. The view matters more than the minimum spec; we orient the deck to capture the best aspect and shelter from south-westerly winter winds.
