Composite decking brands compared.
Composite decking gets sold as one category. It isn’t. Different capping technology, different cores, different warranties, very different outcomes at year 8. Here’s the honest comparison.
The five brands.
| Brand | Capping | Cost / m² | Warranty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trex Transcend | 4-sided shell | $560–$620 | 25 yr (fade, stain, performance) |
| Trex Enhance Naturals | 3-sided shell | $500–$560 | 25 yr (performance), 25 yr (fade/stain) |
| ModWood | Uncapped composite | $420–$490 | 10 yr |
| EkoDeck Designer Series | 4-sided capped | $540–$590 | 20 yr |
| NewTechWood UltraShield | 4-sided shell | $510–$570 | 25 yr fade, lifetime structural |
What “capping” actually means.
Capping is a thin (1–2mm) protective shell of PVC or polymer wrapped around the recycled-wood-and-plastic core. It’s what stops mould, staining and fading. Uncapped composite is significantly cheaper but ages much worse.
- 4-sided capping (Trex Transcend, EkoDeck, NewTechWood UltraShield) = top + both edges + groove face shielded. Best protection, especially for outdoor edges.
- 3-sided capping (Trex Enhance) = top + edges, but groove face unprotected. Cheaper, fine for budget Pakenham/Officer suburban builds.
- Uncapped (ModWood) = composite is just polymer-wood blend. Cheapest, prone to mould and staining over time. Best for short-life applications or shaded spots.
The heat issue.
Composite gets hotter than timber in direct sun. Trex Transcend in a Pakenham 38°C summer afternoon reads ~62°C surface temperature. Bare-foot uncomfortable. Mitigations:
- Choose light colours (Trex Vintage Lantern, ModWood Sahara) — reduce surface temp by 8–12°C
- Pergola/shade structure over the deck
- Reserve composite for shaded sections, use hardwood for full-sun sections
- Accept that mid-summer 2pm–4pm is “shoes only”
Honest recommendations.
Highest-quality install, premium suburban Cardinia home: Trex Transcend. 4-sided shell, 25-year fade warranty, biggest brand recognition for resale.
Mid-range budget, looks great: NewTechWood UltraShield. Underrated — comparable to Trex at 80% of the price.
Budget-driven (rental property, short-hold): ModWood. Australian-made, fair value, accept the 10-year warranty horizon.
BAL-rated bushfire area: caution — composite is NOT generally suited for BAL-29 or higher. Stick with Class 1/2 hardwood for hills properties.
